Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to determine the effects of formalin injection versus conventional immersion on radical prostatectomy volume and weight measurements.

Conclusion of Paper

Specimens injected with 20 mL of formalin prior to immersion showed significantly less weight loss after final fixation than specimens fixed solely by immersion. However, method of fixative delivery had no significant effects on specimen shrinkage after fixation or on tumor volume.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of formalin injection versus conventional immersion on radical prostatectomy specimen volume and weight measurements.

    Summary of Findings:

Specimens injected with 20 mL of formalin prior to immersion showed significantly less weight loss after final fixation than specimens fixed solely by immersion (5.8 versus 8.6% weight loss, p<0.001). However, method of fixative delivery had no significant effects on specimen shrinkage after fixation (4.5%) or on tumor volume.
