Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to compare ER, PR and HER-2 status of breast cancer specimens by IHC staining in FNA CB specimens fixed in ethanol with TB specimens fixed in formalin. Fixation of FNA CB specimens in ethanol was followed by formalin fixation.
Summary of Findings:
Positive IHC staining results for ER and PR were 90.4% and 93.9% concordant, respectively between CB and TB specimens. However, agreement between FNA CB and TB specimens was only obtained 73.3% of the time with respect to positive HER-2 status. When positive and negative results were evaluated together, HER-2 staining discrepancy occurred 44.1% of the time. 60% of discrepant cases showed false positive HER-2 staining in FNA CB specimens.
