Purpose of Paper
The purpose of this paper was to determine the effects of storage temperature and duration on pyruvate and lactate levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Conclusion of Paper
Pyruvate levels in CSF were stable (<15% change) for the entire study period at room temperature (3 days) or 4˚C (21 days), but when CSF was stored at -20˚C, pyruvate levels were only stable for 1 day in unadulterated CSF and 10 days in spiked CSF. Lactate levels in CSF were stable (<15% change) for the entire study period (3 days at room temperature and 21 days at 4˚C or -20˚C).

Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of storage temperature and duration on pyruvate and lactate levels in CSF. CSF from an unspecified number of patients was pooled, split into two tubes, one of which was spiked to contain 0.20 mM pyruvate and 4.1 mM lactate, and then aliquoted for storage. Specimens were deproteinized before analysis.
Summary of Findings:
Pyruvate levels in CSF were stable (<15% change) for the entire study period at room temperature (3 days) or 4˚C (21 days), but when CSF was stored at -20˚C, pyruvate levels were only stable for 1 day in unadulterated CSF and 10 days in spiked CSF. Lactate levels in CSF were stable (<15% change) for the entire study period (3 days at room temperature and 21 days at 4˚C or -20˚C).
