Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to determine the influence of age on activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and Anti-factor (F)IIa activity in plasma spiked with heparin.

Conclusion of Paper

At therapeutic heparin levels, APTT and Anti-FIIa activity were higher in plasma from children less than 5 years old than adults. Further, increasing Anti-factor (F)Xa heparin concentrations resulted in higher increases in APTT in plasma from children than from adults.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of age on APTT and Anti-FIIa activity in plasma spiked with heparin. Plasma specimens were pooled according to age and frozen at -85 degrees C until analysis.

    Summary of Findings:

At therapeutic levels of heparin (0.35 to 0.7 Anti-FXa International Units (IU)/mL), APTT and Anti-FIIa activity were higher in plasma from children less than 5 years old than adults (p<0.05). Further, increasing Anti-FXa heparin concentrations resulted in higher increases in APTT in plasma from children than from adults.
