Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to determine if the temperature (-80 or -150 degrees C) of long term specimen storage affects trace element composition.

Conclusion of Paper

No macroscopic evidence of specimen degradation was observed among cryopreserved liver specimens stored at either temperature. Specimen trace element composition (Rb, Fe, Zn) was unaltered by 17 years of storage at either storage temperature. The following elements were not altered by prolonged storage at either temperature, although several elements were at or below the detection limit of the platform: As, Mo, Cd, Sm, La.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine if the temperature (-80 or -150 degrees C) of long term specimen storage affects trace element composition. Subsets of five liver specimens snap-frozen and stored in pre-cleaned Teflon jars at -150 degrees in a liquid nitrogen vapor cooled freezer or a -80 degree C freezer for 17 years were examined.

    Summary of Findings:

No macroscopic evidence of specimen degradation was observed among cryopreserved liver specimens stored at either temperature. Specimen trace element composition (Rb, Fe, Zn) was unaltered by 17 years of storage at either storage temperature. The following elements were not altered by prolonged storage at either temperature, although several elements were at or below the detection limit of the platform: As, Mo, Cd, Sm, La.
