Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to determine the effects of gender on the serum proteome.

Conclusion of Paper

The authors identified 117 and 65 proteins that were preferentially expressed in females or males, respectively and 1331 proteins that were expressed at similar levels in males and females. Another 2551 proteins showed no expression trends based on gender.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of gender on the serum proteome. After separation, the serum from 12 males and 12 females was transferred in non-adsorption tubes and supplemented with protease inhibitors and phosphatase inhibitors and pooled to make 2 male and 2 female serum pools. Peptide identification was completed by MALDI-TOF-TOF MS with isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) analysis.

    Summary of Findings:

Overall protein levels were similar in males and females, however, 2D difference gel electrophoresis (DIGE) analysis of protein fractions showed gender specific profiles. 1513 proteins were found to be expressed at similar levels in the two serum specimens from males. Of these, 117 which tended to be associated with breast cancer or arthritis were expressed at more than 1.5 fold higher levels in females than males. 65 proteins were expressed at more than 1.5 fold higher levels in males than females and were generally associated with cascades involving males hormones. 1331 proteins were expressed at similar levels in the males and females and were generally associated with housekeeping functions. 2551 proteins showed variability in expression between serum pools from patients of the same gender. .
