Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of patient gender and posture on serum triglycerides, and HDL, LDL + VLDL, and total cholesterol, hematocrit, plasma protein, glucose, bilirubin, uric acid, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, total protein, albumin, globulin, electrolyte balance, potassium, sodium, chloride, inorganic phosphate, calcium, iron, CPK, LDH, SGOT, and alkaline phosphatase. Specimens were taken after 30 min of lying down and after 30 min of standing.
Summary of Findings:
Movement from a supine position to a standing position resulted in increases in hematocrit, total protein, triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL + VLDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, CPK, LDH, SGOT, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, calcium, and iron in serum specimens. However, the total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio, uric acid, blood urea nitrogen, glucose, creatinine, inorganic phosphate, sodium, chloride, and potassium were not significantly different between the specimens collected from individuals in a standing or supine position. In general, % changes associated with patient posture were similar between men and women, except triglycerides increased by an average of 8.2% in standing men compared to supine men while they increased by 17.0% in standing women compared to supine women. Standing after being in a supine position for 30 min significantly decreased total plasma volume in both men and women by an average of 13.8%.
