Purpose of Paper
The purpose of this paper was to determine the effect of labor, pre-delivery versus post-delivery collection, labor duration and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) on levels of the placenta-specific microRNAs (miRNA, miR) in the plasma of women before and after delivery by Cesarean (C) section.
Conclusion of Paper
Regardless of labor, levels of miR-515-3p, miR-517a, miR-517c, and miR-518b were lower 24 h after delivery than before delivery. Pre-delivery and 24 h post-delivery levels, as well as clearance rates of miR-515-3p, miR-517a, miR-517c, and miR-518b, were higher in the plasma of women who had gone into labor than those who had not. There was no association between pre- or post-delivery levels or the clearance rate of miR-515-3p, miR-517a, miR-517c, and miR-518b with the eGFR or labor duration.

Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of labor, pre-delivery versus post-delivery collection, labor duration and estimated eGFR on levels of the placenta-specific microRNAs (miR-515-3p, miR-517a, miR-517c, and miR-518b) in the plasma of women before and after delivery by C-section. Blood was collected from 32 women who had a C-section after going into labor (mean 561.9 min of labor) and 32 women who had a C-section without going into labor <3 h before C-section and 24 h after C-section. EDTA plasma was obtained by double centrifugation. RNA was extracted using the mirVana kit and quantified by TaqMan real-time PCR.
Summary of Findings:
Regardless of labor, levels of miR-515-3p, miR-517a, miR-517c, and miR-518b were lower 24 h after delivery than before delivery (p<0.001, all). Pre-delivery levels of miR-515-3p, miR-517a, miR-517c, and miR-518b were higher in the plasma of women who had gone into labor than those who had not (p=0.001, p=0.002, p=0.001, and p=0.003, respectively). 24 h post-delivery levels of miR-515-3p, miR-517a, miR-517c, and miR-518b were higher in the plasma of women who had gone into labor than those who had not (p=0.002, p=0.017, p=0.043 and p=0.009, respectively). Finally, the clearance rate of miR-515-3p, miR-517a, miR-517c, and miR-518b was higher in women who went into labor than in those who did not (p=0.005, p=0.008, p=0.001, and p=0.043, respectively). Finally, there was no association between pre- or post-delivery levels or the clearance rate of miR-515-3p, miR-517a, miR-517c, and miR-518b with eGFR or labor duration.
