Purpose of Paper
This paper compared the effect of computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound (US)-guidance on the number of glomeruli obtained from renal biopsies.
Conclusion of Paper
When guidance was by US, 8 of 155 specimens (5.2%) contained no glomerular cells and 26 of 155 (16.8%) contained fewer than 5 glomerular cells, but all specimens obtained under CT-guidance contained more than 5 glomerular cells. Further, the average number of glomerular cells was significantly higher in biopsies obtained with CT-guidance then ultrasound-guidance.

Study Purpose
This study compared the effects of CT- and US-guidance on the number of glomeruli obtained from renal biopsies. Biopsies were obtained using a spring-loaded 18 G needle under CT-(50 patients) or US-guidance (155 patients) by one of 2 nephrologists. CT guidance was provided by a technician while ultrasound guidance was provided by a senior radiologist. The reasons for biopsy were unexplained renal failure, nephritic syndrome, or systemic lupus erythematosis. Adequate tissue was defined as 10-15 glomeruli and inadequate as a biopsy containing <6 glomeruli. The method of biopsy preservation and analysis was not specified.
Summary of Findings:
When guidance was by ultrasound, 8 of 155 specimens (5.2%) contained no glomeruli cells and 26 of 155 (16.8%) contained fewer than 5 glomeruli, but all specimens obtained under CT guidance contained more than 5 glomeruli (P<0.001). Further, the average number of glomeruli was significantly higher in biopsies obtained with CT guidance than ultrasound guidance (23.34 versus 10.28, P<0.05).
