Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of patient gender and age and storage on the quantification of 18S rRNA and beta actin in hair specimens.
Summary of Findings:
18S rRNA and beta actin levels declined by 10% and 40% respectively during the first day. After the first day, beta actin levels continued to decline steadily, but 18S rRNA remained relatively stable until 45 days. Interindividual variability increased with storage. The authors report no bias from patient age or gender, and that quantification of 18s rRNA and beta actin was possible from as little as 1 and 3 hair follicles, respectively.
