Purpose of Paper
The purpose of this paper was to determine the effects of hemolysis, delayed freezing, and assay type on the quantification of insulin in EDTA plasma and serum.
Conclusion of Paper
Insulin levels declined with increasing hemolysate, reaching <50% of initial levels with 5% of red blood cells hemolyzed. The decline in insulin with increasing hemolysis was heightened when plasma or serum specimens were stored for 2 h before freezing. When assayed by chemiluminescent immunoassay instead of RIA, measured levels of insulin were 1.6 mU/L lower, and measured levels of c-peptide were higher with an increasing bias in c-peptide with increasing concentration.
