Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of patient age and gender as well as collection of capillary versus venous specimens on S100B levels in serum. Specimens were frozen at -80 degrees C until analysis.
Summary of Findings:
Higher S100B concentrations were found in venous serum drawn before or after anesthesia and capillary serum from younger children (age 1-2) than from 3-14 year olds (p<0.0001). In the younger age group, specimens from males had lower S100B concentrations than from females. Gender had no effect on S100B concentrations in specimens from 3-14 year olds. Capillary specimens had higher S100B concentrations than venous specimens. A statistically significant, but clinically insignificant difference in S100B concentrations was found between venous specimens drawn before and after anesthesia, with the latter having slightly lower values (p<0.0001).
