Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of gel barrier on correct separation of liquid phase and cells in blood specimens from a woman with IgA lambda myeloma.
Summary of Findings:
In this patient, the gel barrier between plasma and cells in BD Vacutainer PST II was disrupted, but gel barrier formation was correct in BD Vacutainer SST II tubes. The authors determined that the higher density of the patient's plasma due to high total protein content was responsible for disrupting the gel barrier formation in BD Vacutainer PST II tubes. The authors postulate that the lack of fibrinogen in the serum decreased the density and thus gel barrier formation was not disrupted.
