Study Purpose
The purpose of this paper was to determine if serum protein profiles are adversely affected by different collection tube types, clotting times, transport temperatures and durations, and storage conditions, as measured by SELD-TOF-MS. The method of specimen transportation was not specified.
Summary of Findings:
Principal components analysis revealed partial grouping of samples based upon storage temperature (room temperature versus wet ice) prior to centrifugation, while no differences were present among samples transported on ice regardless of duration (3 versus 6 h). Statistical analysis revealed that clotting time also influenced serum protein profiles (5 versus 60 min), while the type of storage container had no effect. Effects due to collection tube type could not be extrapolated. Effects of serum handling variables were protein specific. The authors conclude that storage on wet ice is critical in the preservation of serum protein profiles, although a clotting time of 60 minutes yielded less profile variability.
