Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to determine the effects of delayed centrifugation, storage temperature, and freeze-thaw cycling on the stability of tumor marker OVX1 in plasma and serum.

Conclusion of Paper

OVX1 concentrations were significantly increased after room temperature storage of blood prior to centrifugation. Plasma specimens showed significantly lower concentrations of OVX1 than serum specimens. Freeze-thaw cycling of serum and storage of whole blood at 4 degrees C prior to centrifugation had little effect on serum OVX1 concentrations.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of delayed centrifugation, storage temperature, and freeze-thaw cycling on the stability of OVX1 in plasma and serum. All specimens were frozen at -20 degrees C until analysis.

    Summary of Findings:

Compared to serum OVX1 levels in immediately centrifuged specimens (4.0 kilounits/L), significant increases were observed after blood specimens were left at room temperature for 3 h (5.5 kilounits/L) and 48 h (15.0 kilounits/L) prior to centrifugation. However, storage of blood specimens at 4 degrees C for up to 72 hours prior to centrifugation had no effect on serum OVX1 concentrations. Plasma from EDTA blood or heparinated blood showed significantly lower OVX1 concentrations than serum specimens collected in tubes without anticoagulant. Up to 8 freeze-thaw cycles produced clinically insignificant decreases in serum OVX1 concentrations.
