Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to determine the effects of storing whole blood at 7 temperatures for 24 h on the levels of 27 clinical chemistry analytes in serum.

Conclusion of Paper

Storage of whole blood for 24 h led to temperature dependent changes in creatinine, glucose, inorganic phosphorous (P), potassium (K), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) compared to serum analyzed immediately.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of storing whole blood at 7 temperatures for 24 h on the levels of 27 clinical chemistry analytes in serum.

    Summary of Findings:

Levels of P increased in serum with increasing storage temperature when blood was stored at temperatures greater than 22 degrees C for 24 h rather than analyzed immediately. Levels of K decreased in serum with decreasing blood storage temperatures below 15 degrees C, but serum K levels were increased in specimens stored at 38 degrees C compared to specimens that were not stored. Serum glucose decreased with increasing blood storage temperature. AST was elevated in serum when blood specimens were stored at 25 or 30 degrees C, and ALT was elevated in serum when blood specimens were stored at 30 degrees C compared to specimens that were not stored. Creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase increased insignificantly in serum when whole blood was stored at 3 degrees C, and creatinine increased when blood specimens were stored above 25 degrees C compared to specimens analyzed immediately.
