Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to determine the effects of strenuous exercise prior to specimen collection on the concentrations of high sensitivity troponin I (TnI), galectin-3, and N-terminal B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in serum.

Conclusion of Paper

Levels of TnI, galectin-3, and NT-proBNP were all significantly higher in specimens collected after volunteers ran an ultramarathon compared to before. The post-ultramarathon increases in galectin-3 and NT-proBNP led to significant increases in the number of specimens exceeding diagnostic thresholds.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of strenuous exercise prior to specimen collection on the concentrations of TnI, galectin-3, and NT-proBNP in serum specimens from 18 trained athletes completing a 60 km ultramarathon. Serum was frozen at -70 degrees C until analysis.

    Summary of Findings:

Levels of TnI, galectin-3, and NT-proBNP were all significantly increased when specimens were collected within 10 minutes of volunteers running an ultramarathon compared to baseline levels measured in specimens obtained before volunteers ran. Levels of all three analytes were still significantly increased from baseline among the 5 specimens obtained from volunteer athletes 1 hour post-ultramarathon, but NT-proBNP and galectin-3 had begun to decrease compared to levels in specimens obtained 10 min post-ultramarathon. Significant differences in the percentages of specimens exceeding diagnostic thresholds were observed between baseline levels and 10 min post-ultramarathon levels for NT-proBNP and galectin-3, but not TnI.
