Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to determine the effects of strenuous exercise on the levels of creatinine and neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin (NGAL) in serum and urine.

Conclusion of Paper

Creatinine and NGAL levels increased significantly in serum and urine after volunteers completed an ultramarathon compared to levels measured prior to the ultramarathon.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of strenuous exercise in the form of an ultramarathon on the levels of creatinine and NGAL in serum and the correlation with urine levels.

    Summary of Findings:

Serum creatinine increased by an average of 38% after volunteers completed running an ultramarathon, and NGAL increased by 1.6-fold compared to levels measured in serum collected prior to when volunteers ran. There were no significant correlations found between pre-exercise levels of serum and urine NGAL or between post-exercise levels of serum and urine NGAL. However, there was a strong correlation between the post-exercise changes in serum creatinine levels and those in serum NGAL (r=0.813).

  2. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of strenuous exercise in the form of an ultramarathon on the levels of creatinine and NGAL in urine.

    Summary of Findings:

Urine creatinine increased by an average of 78% in specimens collected after the ultramarathon, and urine NGAL increased by 7.7-fold compared to levels measured in urine collected prior to the ultramarathon.
