Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of hemolysis and storage of blood specimens at room temperature on serum troponin T levels as measured by the hs assay. Hemolysis free serum pools with troponin T were added to blood for non-hemolysed specimens, and hemolysate was added to serum specimens containing troponin T to resemble hemolysed specimens.
Summary of Findings:
Storage of blood specimens at room temperature had no significant effect on serum troponin T levels in the absence of hemolysis. However, in the presence of hemolysis, storage at room temperature resulted in negative interference with the troponin T hs assay in a hemoglobin concentration-dependent and time-dependent, but troponin T concentration-independent manner. However, storage of hemolysed specimens at room temperature for up to 6 hours resulted in changes in troponin T measurements of less than 10%, except at the highest degree of hemolysis (2 g/L of added hemoglobin).
