Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to determine the effects of vacuum tube brand on activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT), and fibrinogen measurements in sodium citrate plasma.

Conclusion of Paper

APTT and PT measurements were significantly different between specimens collected in the majority of tube brands examined. However, fibrinogen measurements were not significantly affected by the brand of vacuum tube used for blood collection.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of vacuum tube brand on APTT, PT, and fibrinogen measurements in sodium citrate plasma. Plasma was frozen at -70 degrees C until analysis.

    Summary of Findings:

APTT measurements were statistically and clinically significantly different between specimens collected in the Venosafe tubes and the Vacuette tubes and between specimens collected in the Labor Import tubes and the Venosafe, Vacuette, Vacutainer, and Monovette tubes. Specimens collected in the Vacuette tubes yielded the shortest average APTT while specimens collected in the Labor Import tubes yielded the longest average APTT. Statistically significant but clinically insignificant differences in APTT measurements were also seen between specimens collected in the Venosafe and Vacutainer tubes. PT measurements were statistically and clinically significantly different between specimens collected in the Venosafe tubes and the Vacuette, Vacutainer, and Monovette tubes, between specimens collected in the Vacuette tubes and the Labor Import and Monovette tubes, and between specimens collected in the Labor Import tubes and the Vacutainer and Monovette tubes. Specimens collected in Venosafe and Labor Import tubes yielded the longest average PT, while specimens in the Vacuette tubes yielded the shortest average PT. Statistically significant but clinically insignificant differences in PT measurements were also seen between specimens collected in the Vacutainer tubes and the Vacuette and Monovette tubes. Fibrinogen measurements were not significantly different between specimens collected in any of the tube brands.
