Purpose of Paper
This paper compared the stability of glucose in blood at room temperature in sodium heparin, sodium citrate, and sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate (NaF/KOx) tubes before centrifugation.
Conclusion of Paper
Levels of glucose were comparable between tube types when centrifuged within 15 min. Glucose levels declined with delayed centrifugation with significantly lower levels in specimens stored for 1 h than those processed within 15 min, regardless of tube type. Glucose levels mostly stabilized in NaF/KOx tubes when centrifugation was delayed by 4 h (5.71% lower than when processed within 15 min) but levels declined with increased processing delay in citrate and heparin tubes.

Study Purpose
This study compared the stability of glucose in blood at room temperature in sodium heparin, sodium citrate, and NaF/KOx tubes before centrifugation. Blood was collected from 16 healthy fasting or non-fasting volunteers into sodium heparin, sodium citrate, and NaF/KOx. Blood from each tube was mixed and aliquoted into five more tubes. Aliquots were centrifuged (speed and duration not specified) after 15 min, 1 h, 2 h, 4 h, 8 h, and 24 h at room temperature. Glucose levels were measured by a Vitros 5.1 Analyzer and those in sodium citrate tubes were corrected for volume differences.
Summary of Findings:
Levels of glucose were comparable between tube types when centrifuged within 15 min. Glucose levels declined with delayed centrifugation with significantly lower levels in specimens stored for 1 h than those processed within 15 min, regardless of tube type (2.31-3.34%, P<0.05, all). Glucose levels mostly stabilized in NaF/KOx tubes when centrifugation was delayed by 4 h (5.71% lower than when processed within 15 min) but levels declined with increased processing delay in citrate and heparin tubes.
