Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to determine the effects of recentrifugation of serum separator tubes (SST) following room temperature or refrigerated storage on levels of 10 clinical chemistry analytes.

Conclusion of Paper

When specimens were stored in the SST and recentrifuged prior to analysis, significantly higher levels of glucose, sodium, potassium creatinine, bicarbonate, phosphorus, and magnesium were measured than when analyzed immediately following the initial centrifugation.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of recentrifugation of SST following room temperature or refrigerated storage on levels of 10 clinical chemistry analytes. Blood was collected from 6 healthy individuals in SST. All tubes were centrifuged and assayed prior to room temperature or refrigerated storage and then again after storage. This study does not separately analyze the effects of post-centrifugation storage and a second centrifugation step.

    Summary of Findings:

After storage at room temperature for 2-24 h and recentrifugation, levels of glucose (p=0.003), sodium (p=0.005), creatinine (p<0.0001), bicarbonate (p=0.004), phosphorus (p=0.01), and magnesium (p=0.002) were higher than when assayed immediately after the initial centrifugation. Compared to baseline, specimens stored at 4°C for 2-24 h and recentrifuged had higher levels of potassium (p=0.004), creatinine (p<0.0001), bicarbonate (p=0.001), phosphorus (p=0.004), and magnesium (p=0.04) than when assayed immediately after the initial centrifugation. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), chloride, and calcium were not affected by storage (either temperature) and recentrifugation.
