Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of centrifuging plasma or serum separately for 10 min at 1885 x g instead of in the analyzer for 5 min at 1885 x g on the levels of 22 clinical chemistry analytes. After centrifugation, all specimens were immediately placed into the analyzer for automated processing.
Summary of Findings:
Use of the analyzer's 5 min centrifugation rather than a separate 10 min centrifugation before loading the specimens in the analyzer resulted in no statistical differences and very strong correlations in the levels of all analytes except the hemolysis index in plasma and serum and the lipemia index in plasma. The authors attribute the higher lipemia index after the 5 min centrifugation compared to the 10 min centrifugation (p<0.0001) to turbidity. The authors excluded the hemolysis index from correlation analysis because of too many values below the detection limit of the assay.
