Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of refrigerated storage of serum in SST on clinical chemistry analyses.
Summary of Findings:
Storage of serum for 48 hours in the SST in which specimens were collected and centrifuged had no clinically significant effects on 86 clinical chemistry determinations when compared with serum that was transferred to a disposable closed culture tube for storage. However, six small but statistically significant (p=0.05) changes were noted including changes in lactate dehydrogenase by SMAC, glucose by SMA 6/60 and AutoAnalyzer I, chloride by colorimetric determination, and lactic acid and lactate dehydrogenase by Dupont ACA. Notably, other methods of detecting these same analytes did not find any statistically significant changes.
