Purpose of Paper
The purpose of this paper was to examine the effects of storage and dietary supplementation on levels of micronutrients in plasma.
Conclusion of Paper
Oral administration of beta carotene, alpha tocopherol and vegetable juice caused an increase in plasma beta carotene, cis-beta carotene and alpha tocopherol, but no changes in lycopene, alpha carotene, lutein, cryptoxanthin, or retinyl palmitate levels and a decrease in gamma tocopherol. Micronutrient levels were stable in plasma specimens stored at -80 degrees C for at least 8 months and the authors report no significant changes after 17 months.

Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of storage and dietary supplementation on levels of micronutrients in buccal cells. Cell were collected using a soft toothbrush and a saline oral rinse.
Summary of Findings:
Levels of the micronutrients showed low variability within each individual but relatively high variability between individuals. Most specimens from patients had levels which fell within a small range, but up to 15% of specimens showed much higher levels. Oral administration of beta carotene, alpha tocopherol and vegetable juice caused an increase in buccal cell beta carotene, cis-beta carotene and alpha tocopherol, but no changes in lycopene, alpha carotene, lutein, cryptoxanthin, or retinyl palmitate levels and a decrease in gamma tocopherol. Micronutrient levels were stable in buccal cell specimens stored at -80 degrees C for at least 8 months and the authors report no significant changes after 17 months.
