Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to evaluate whether the type of blood-storage tube influenced the measurable levels of epidermal growth factor (EGF). Findings of higher EGF levels in serum than plasma and in female than male subjects were further investigated.

Conclusion of Paper

The levels of EGF measured in serum from the same patients and the same blood draw were significantly different among the six storage tube types measured. Levels were undetectable in plasma; serum EGF levels were likely detectable due to release of EGF from platelets during refrigerated storage. EGF levels were significantly higher in female compared to male subjects.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether blood EGF levels were influenced by the type of blood-storage tube. Blood taken in one draw was separated into six different tubes.

    Summary of Findings:

EGF peptide levels were dependent upon the type of collection tube used; EGF levels were highest in polystyrene tubes, followed by glass, plastic with clot activator, plastic without clot activator, polypropylene, and plastic tubes with EDTA. EGF levels in blood separated sera differed based upon glass versus polypropylene collection tube, and polystyrene versus vac-gel, vac no-gel, and polypropylene tubes, but not glass versus polystyrene tubes. Plasma separated specimens collected in plastic tubes failed to generate detectable EGF levels. The authors hypothesize that the difference among EGF plasma and serum levels may be due to innate and continuing platelet activity during refrigerated storage.

  2. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether male and female patients had statistically significant differences in serum EGF levels.

    Summary of Findings:

Female patients (17 subjects) exhibited statistically significantly higher EGF levels than male (17 subjects) patients. Both sexes displayed similar collection tube dependent trends in EGF levels.
