Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of using a VAMP system on hemoglobin concentrations in blood from ICU patients. Blood was sampled every 12 h during the patients' stay in the ICU.
Summary of Findings:
While both specimens collected with a VAMP system in place and those without showed decreases in hemoglobin concentrations over the length of the patients' stays in the ICU, after 228 hours, specimens drawn with a VAMP system in place had significantly higher levels of hemoglobin than those drawn with no blood conservation device in the arterial catheter tubing system. Prior to 228 hours, the differences in hemoglobin levels were not significant. Univariate linear regression analysis revealed that the volume of discarded blood, as well as other factors, was significantly associated with the decrease in hemoglobin concentration in specimens drawn as the duration of patient stays in the ICU increased. Use of the VAMP system significantly decreased the volume of discarded blood (p<0.0001).
