Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of collection tube type and storage at 4 degrees C on the gel for 43 different clinical chemistry analytes in serum. In some cases, blood was collected into the two types of tubes and analyzed, while in other cases, 1 mL of stored serum was added to the gel tubes prior to experimental storage and analysis. The authors do not state the temperature or duration of storage or the collection tube type for this set of specimens.
Summary of Findings:
Visual examination of the SST Plus and SST II gel tubes revealed similar appearance and barrier formation. 3/58 SST II tubes contained hemolysis compared to 1/58 SST Plus tubes. There were no clinically significant differences between tube types for any of the 43 analytes measured immediately, but estradiol, progesterone, and CA-125 decreased after storage of serum for 22-26 h (stored serum added to the tube with no clot) at 4 degrees C in either tube type, while the other analytes examined remained stable.
