Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to assess the effects of anticoagulant and draw order on calcium and potassium levels in blood.

Conclusion of Paper

When blood was collected first into the K3EDTA tube, levels of potassium were increased and calcium levels were decreased in the second collection which was drawn into a serum separator tube (SST), but when the SST was used for the first collection and the K3EDTA tube was used for the second, no interference was observed.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine effects of anticoagulant and draw order on calcium and potassium levels in blood. Blood was collected from a single venipuncture, first into an SST, then a K3EDTA tube. After a second venipuncture in the same individual, the tube order used for collection of two specimens was reversed.

    Summary of Findings:

When blood was collected first into the K3EDTA tube, levels of potassium were increased and calcium levels were decreased in the second collection which was drawn into an SST, but when the SST was used for the first collection and the K3EDTA tube was used for the second, no interference was observed. The authors note that similar interference can occur with other anticoagulants so a strict order of draw should be followed.
