Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of time of collection, patient age, and gender on Lp-PLA2 mass and activity in serum. Serum was stored at -80 degrees C until analysis.
Summary of Findings:
Lp-PLA2 mass was significantly lower in specimens collected at 2:00 am compared to those collected at 2:00 pm or 6:00 pm (p=0.047 and p=0.03, respectively), but no other significant differences in Lp-PLA2 mass were noted between collection time points. Lp-PLA2 mass was not significantly affected by patient age or gender. Lp-PLA2 activity was significantly lower in specimens collected at 2:00 am than those collected at 6:00 am (p=0.04), but no other significant differences in Lp-PLA2 activity were noted between collection time points. Lp-PLA2 activity was significantly lower among specimens collected from women compared to those collected from men (p=0.01), but patient age had no effect on Lp-PLA2 activity.
