Purpose of Paper

The purpose of this paper was to determine the effects of time of collection, patient age, and gender on lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) mass and activity in serum.

Conclusion of Paper

Lp-PLA2 mass was significantly lower in specimens collected at 2:00 am compared to those collected at 2:00 pm or 6:00 pm, and Lp-PLA2 activity was significantly lower in specimens collected at 2:00 am than those collected at 6:00 am. Lp-PLA2 mass was not significantly affected by patient age or gender, but Lp-PLA2 activity was significantly lower among specimens collected from women compared to those collected from men.

Studies

  1. Study Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of time of collection, patient age, and gender on Lp-PLA2 mass and activity in serum. Serum was stored at -80 degrees C until analysis.

    Summary of Findings:

Lp-PLA2 mass was significantly lower in specimens collected at 2:00 am compared to those collected at 2:00 pm or 6:00 pm (p=0.047 and p=0.03, respectively), but no other significant differences in Lp-PLA2 mass were noted between collection time points. Lp-PLA2 mass was not significantly affected by patient age or gender. Lp-PLA2 activity was significantly lower in specimens collected at 2:00 am than those collected at 6:00 am (p=0.04), but no other significant differences in Lp-PLA2 activity were noted between collection time points. Lp-PLA2 activity was significantly lower among specimens collected from women compared to those collected from men (p=0.01), but patient age had no effect on Lp-PLA2 activity.
