Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of tourniquet application on thyroid hormones and thyroid binding protein levels in serum. The authors do not describe preparation of serum from blood specimens and whether the serum was stored prior to analysis. Blood was collected from one arm without venous occlusion and from the other arm with either 3 minutes of tourniquet application or 2 minutes of tourniquet application along with fist clenching.
Summary of Findings:
T4, T3, TBG, PA, and albumin were all significantly higher in blood collected after 2 or 3 minutes of tourniquet application compared with levels measured in serum from blood collected with no tourniquet application. Free T4 was significantly higher in serum when specimens were collected with 3 minutes of tourniquet application but not 2 minutes, compared to no tourniquet application.
